My father was from a minor branch of the Julians,
tho' he always pretended to more dignitas than we deserved. I
am the youngest of five daughters, all named Julia, so I was saddled
with the ridiculous diminutive of "Julilla."
Pater was fortunate indeed to marry us all
off, though he continues to deplore my independence. "A wife ought
not to have friends of her own," he advises me constantly, "but
enjoy her husband's friends together with him." I am happy to say my
dear husband, Marcus Sempronius, disagrees! |
